My city was wounded this week. Two bombs ripped through its heart. I take consolation in the fact that I am safe, my friends are safe, that the horror was limited to the extent that it was, not to the extent of our collective imaginations.
Prayers. Prayers for the lives lost, limbs lost, lives forever changed. Prayers for the perpetrator(s), for justice. But also prayers that God’s offer of forgiveness and mercy is accepted; that we who were affected have the capacity to offer forgiveness and mercy.
The above was drafted on Tuesday. It is now Friday, one of the bombing suspects is dead and one at large, and reportedly armed and dangerous. My city is shut down. I am home safe a few miles away, but rattled.
For the sake of your sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and the whole world.
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; may God rebuke them we humbly pray. And do then, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” Jn 14:27
Come Holy Ghost, creator blest, and in our souls take up thy rest.
For to his angels he’s given a command to guard you in all of your ways; upon their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy. Our life, our sweetness, our hope! To thee do we cry poor banished children of Eve, to thee do we send up our sighs and mourning, and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most Gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus, O merciful, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
